The National Association for Music Education, founded in 1907, is an organization whose mission is to promote and support music making by all people and the study of music education. The original association consisted of 64 members. Today, there are over 130, 000 members, consisting of active, future, and past music teachers, university faculty and researchers, and high school honor society members.
Their website provides a variety of information. On the home page is a link to the Music Educators Journal of the month. Here, one can read several articles and periodicals featured in the present issue, and also suscribe to the journal. In addition, there is a monthly special that can be purchased by members, a question of the month, the MENC draft strategic plan, and announcements. Further more, there is a link called “Ask the Mentors.” By clicking on this, one can ask new monthly experts questions about music education. There is an expert for each field of study (for example, band, chorus, orchestra, etc.).
Along the side, there are links to information about membership, books, conferences, concerts, careers, and much more. There are also separate sections for each branch of music education (band, chorus, technology, research, etc.). On the other side, there is a calendar of upcoming events.
Along the top, there is an index and a link to a search box, so one can find specific information. Further more, there is an “About MENC” link, which provides information about the history and purpose of MENC. Lastly, there is a “Contact Us” link, which provides the mailing address, fax and phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of the organization.
This national organization can provide many new ideas, opportunities for performance, teaching, and learning, and create new relationships and support systems for all members.
